When Should You Redesign Your Website?
Not every dated site needs a full rebuild. These are the signs a redesign is worth it, and what to protect when you do it.
A redesign is a significant investment, so it is worth being sure it is the right move. Here are the signs it may be.
Signs it is time
- It looks dated. Visitors judge your business by your website, often within seconds.
- It is hard to use on a phone. If visitors have to pinch and zoom, you are losing them.
- It is slow. Sometimes this can be fixed without a redesign, but sometimes the structure itself is the problem.
- People cannot find things. Confusing menus and buried information cost enquiries.
- It no longer reflects your business. New services, a new brand or a new audience may not fit the old site.
- Updating it is painful. If every small change needs a developer and a week, something is wrong.
When you may not need one
Sometimes the problem is narrower: a broken form, slow hosting, a few weak pages. Targeted fixes can cost far less than a rebuild. A good developer will tell you which applies.
What to protect during a redesign
- Search visibility. Pages that already attract visitors should keep their address or be redirected properly.
- Good content. Reuse what works rather than discarding it.
- Analytics history. Keep your tracking in place so you can compare before and after.
What to decide before you start
- What is the website supposed to achieve? More enquiries, bookings, credibility?
- Who are the visitors, and what do they need?
- What works well today, and what does not?
